Designed in 1958, the cottage is balanced on the edge of a secluded promontory
that plunges down to Mirror Lake in one of Wisconsin's most popular state
parks near the Wisconsin Dells, . The building possesses a monumentality
that is surprising in so small a structure. The exterior and interior walls
and huge central fireplace are horizontally-layered local sandstone. Floor
and terraces are flagstone.

You can actually spend a weekend or a week in a Frank Lloyd Wright cottage.
This 900-square foot building is available for vacation rental.
The great soaring roof, which seems to hang in space without support, frames
the principal views to the west and south, and opens the interior to the
surrounding trees, the lake view, and to light and shadow.

Audrey's
Star
|
|
IN
THE late 1980s, a woman named Audrey Laatsch was canoeing on
Mirror Lake near Lake Delton when she spotted the ruins of a
small cottage up on a hill. She decided to investigate, and the
rest is history.
It turned out
the cottage, known as the Seth Peterson Cottage, was one of the
last commissions of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Laatsch
launched a grass-roots campaign to have the cottage restored,
and after a lot of sweat and tears, the restoration was finished
for Wright's 125th birthday anniversary in June 1992. |
 |
Laatsch died last August (2002). Mount Horeb artist Jeff Hagen -
best known lately for his lively books on Wisconsin fish fries - was
Laatsch's friend and spoke with her days before her death. "She was
a great woman," Hagen said Friday. The artist had thought about
writing some kind of obituary but decided to try something that
would be more lasting. He wound up doing a watercolor painting,
"Audrey's Star," of the Peterson cabin, and now a limited edition
print of the painting has just been made available, with proceeds
going to Laatsch's memorial fund. For more information on the print
you can write: The Seth Peterson Cottage Conservancy, Box 334, Lake
Delton, WI 53940.
