Wright and Like: 2005
Connections and Connotations
Frank Lloyd Wright and his Contemporaries in Milwaukee

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Saturday June 11, 2005                       - Last updated March 31, 2005

American System-Built Homes Model 7A

This year Frank Lloyd Wright® Wisconsin brings its "Wright & Like 2005" back to Milwaukee. The tour focuses on our organization’s newest venture, the preservation of one of Frank Lloyd Wright's American System-Built Homes. This 1916 cottage plus a neighboring duplex will be open to view.

These two structures plus three more duplexes and another cottage, comprise the only known urban development of this type by Frank Lloyd Wright. Situated in a single block on West Burnham Street, they make a social and historic statement as Wright’s earliest experiments in low-cost housing. Forty years later the Joseph Mollica House was built using a prefabricated design.  It reflects Wright’s life-long interest in bringing good architecture to ordinary people.

The "like" homes this year are by architects with important CONNECTIONS and CONNOTATIONS to Frank Lloyd Wright. Emil Brodelle, Russell Barr Williamson, William Kaeser and John Randal McDonald all drew on Wright's architectural vocabulary.

As always, Wright & Like offers an unusual opportunity to enter a series of architecturally special homes that their owners have graciously been willing to open for the day. Wright and Like is a benefit event organized by the volunteers of Frank Lloyd Wright® Wisconsin.

An Evening at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church
Friday Evening June 10, 2005, 6-8:30pm

On Friday June 10, from 6-8:30pm, Frank Lloyd Wright® Wisconsin is proud to present a very special event: An Evening at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Join us for a lively discourse between Tony Puttnam, Taliesin apprentice to Wright at the time the church was built, and Jim Pouros, Annunciation church historian and contributor to the book, New World Odyssey, with moderator Paul Jakubovich, preservation planner for the city of Milwaukee. A hearty selection of Greek delicacies, including a wide variety of Greek salads and shiskabobs, stuffed grape leaves and Greek meatballs will be served. Following the dinner/discussion there will be a magical evening tour of the Church. Coffee and Greek pastries will be served afterwards.

Tickets for this inspiring evening are $75. The reservation deadline is June 3rd.

Note: Tom Casey was originally scheduled for this event. Regrettably a minor automobile accident will prevent him from joining us. We especially wish to thank Tony Putnam (also a Taliesin Apprentice with Mr. Wright) for speaking in place of Tom.

Homes and Buildings Tour - Saturday June 11th, 2005, 9:00AM to 5:00PM:

Tour private homes and building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Guides will be present at each site to present information about the buildings, See site details below.

Marjorie and George DeLonge House (Emil Brodelle, 1912)

The George and Marjorie DeLonge House was designed by Emil Brodelle, a name with a powerful CONNECTION to Frank Lloyd Wright but little known to Wright followers. Brodelle, as a 30-year old draftsman working for Wright, was one of the seven victims of the murders and fire at Taliesin I in 1914. Located in Wauwatosa this house is often mistaken for a Russell Barr Williamson design.

American System-Built Homes Model B1 (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1916)

Frank Lloyd Wright had a lifelong interest in developing low-cost housing. Milwaukee developer Arthur L. Richards gave him an opportunity to put this into practice with the design of the American System-Built Homes - six moderately priced structures which form an entire block of Wright designs on Burnham Street on Milwaukee’s south side. One of these, American System-Built Homes Model B1, was recently purchased by Frank Lloyd Wright® WI and will be available for tour in its pre-restoration condition.

Tour Headquarters will be located here.

American System-Built Homes Model 7A (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1916)

In the same block but immediately west of Model B1 is Frank Lloyd Wright’s American System-Built Homes Model 7A. This former duplex, rescued by its current owners more than twenty years ago, has been restored and remodeled as a single family home. It is a shining model of restoration and preservation.

Nathan M. Stein House (Russell Barr Williamson, 1921)

A strong CONNECTION to Wright’s work is the Nathan L. Stein House in Shorewood by Russell Barr Williamson. Williamson worked with Wright from 1914-1918 as the supervising architect on several of Wright’s Milwaukee houses including the Frederick C. Bogk House (1916) and the Arthur L. Richards (1916) Duplexes and Bungalows. He designed many handsome houses, including his own, in the Milwaukee area.

Helen and Adam Wolf House (John Randal McDonald, 1953)

John Randal McDonald began practicing architecture in Racine in the 1950s, designing modest houses with a modern flair inspired by his great admiration for Frank Lloyd Wright. On tour this year, with Wright CONNOTATIONS, is the Helen and Adam Wolf House which McDonald called “Okami Uchi,” the House of the Wolves in Bayside. The current owner, an architect, is renovating the house.

Robert Schulenberg House (William Kaeser, 1954)

William Kaeser was influenced by Eliel Saarinen, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Kaeser met Wright several times on visits to Wright’s home at Taliesin. It was there that Bob Schulenberg, a frequent Taliesin volunteer, befriended Kaeser and eventually asked him to design an organic home for him and his wife. The Usonian-like Wright CONNOTATIONS are easily recognized in the Schulenberg House hidden in a Glendale neighborhood.

Joseph Mollica House (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1956)

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Joseph Mollica House is a reversed version (and the largest) of Prefab #1, the first of three prefabricated designs that Wright produced for Madison builder Marshall Erdman. Mollica, a building contractor, built the house for himself in Bayside, a northeast suburb of Milwaukee. John Eifler and Associates of Chicago designed the 1991 addition.
