Wright and Like: 2006
Prairie in the Pinery

Frank Lloyd Wright and his Contemporaries in Wausau
Wausau, Wisconsin

Saturday June 10th, 2006                       - Last updated May 12th, 2006

Charles and Dorothy Manson House

If your idea of northwoods architecture is a rustic log cabin on a lake, you’re in for a surprise on Saturday June 10th, 2006 when Frank Lloyd Wright® Wisconsin takes its annual Wright & Like Tour to the heart of Wisconsin’s great “Pinery” region, Wausau.

The tour will feature rare visits to houses designed by renown 20th century architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and several by his Chicago contemporary, George Washington Maher.  Both Wright and Maher are famous for leading the uniquely American architectural movement known as the Prairie School.

Past Wright & Like tours have featured Wright’s urban dwellings in cities like Madison, Racine and Milwaukee. But the logging boon of the late 19th century brought prosperity to Wausau and, with it, fine homes. The tour, which will also feature modern examples of Prairie-style buildings by Wausau architects, is whimsically called Prairie in the Pinery.  It is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, with a kickoff party at the new Jefferson Street Inn on Friday evening, June 9, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Homes and Buildings Tour

Saturday June 10th, 2006, 9:00AM to 5:00PM:

Tour private homes and building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and "like" architects. Guides will be present at each site to present information about the buildings, See site details below.

Charles and Dorothy Manson House  (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1938-41)

The Charles and Dorothy Manson House is among Wright’s Usonian designs. However, the strong horizontal line of the house descending three levels down the sloping wooded lot has the silhouette of Wright’s Prairie School houses. Typical of Usonians, the walls are sandwich compositions of plywood and Tidewater cypress board and batten trimmed with local red (Ringle) brick. To protect the house against fierce winters, Wright sandwiched two extra layers into the walls. The house sits on a concrete slab with its back to the street.

Hiram and Irene Stewart House (George Washington Maher, 1906)

The house is also known as “The Stewart Inn”

Built for Pinery lumberman Hiram Stewart and his family, the Stewart House is a grand example of Maher’s Prairie style with narrow horizontal banding on its massive grayblue stucco exterior. Maher’s motif-rhythm theory is at play here with the tulip and the tripartite arch as unifying visual accents throughout the house. The tripartite arch also decorates the sidewalk in front of the house. Now operated as the Stewart Inn, the house has five bedrooms, a third-floor ballroom, and six fireplaces.

Duey-Wright House  (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1957)

The Duey and Julia Wright House was Wright’s last residential design before his death. The elongated ”L” design of this cement-block Usonian home overlooking the Wisconsin River resembles a musical quarter note and is popularly said to be Wright’s nod to his clients who ran the local music store (and who were no relation to F. L. Wright). However, Wright’s drawings and correspondence say nothing of a musical note design other than the wood panels that decorate the clerestory windows and room dividers. Still owned by the Wright family, it now houses Midwest Communications.

Cyrus and Alice Yawkey House (Van Ryn & de Gelleke, architects, 1900-01, George Washington Maher designed sunpoarch)

In 1907 Maher remodeled the interior of this Classical Revival mansion originally designed for Pinery lumberman Cyrus Yawkey by Milwaukee architects Van Ryn and DeGelleke. Maher introduced an oak motif in the den and added the sun porch. The house and French furnishings were bestowed as gifts to the Marathon County Historical Society.

Aytchmonde and Leigh Yawkey Woodson House (George Washington Maher, 1913-14)

410 McIndoe, Wausau, 54403

Maher mixed Prairie and Tudor styles in this stately brick mansion for Aytchmonde and Leigh (Yawkey) Woodson. Exterior Prairie School elements include a hipped roof with wide eaves, ribbon windows, and flower urns flanking the front entrance. Inside, lotus flowers, leaves, and arches throughout the house in leaded glass windows and woodwork carry out Maher’s motif rhythm style of design. The house is now owned by the Marathon County Historical Society.

The 2006 Tour Headquarters will be located here.

The Silent Auction will be set-up at the Tour Headquarters on Saturday and run from 8 am - 4pm.

It will consist of about 20 items from vendors like Prairie Textiles, Carreaux du Nord, Shining Brow Booksellers, etc.

Contemporary Sites:

Grischke & Bremer Law Center (Thomas Mudrovich, 1996)

Built into a hillside with views of Rib Mountain, the exterior of the Grischke & Bremer Law Center draws inspiration from Wright’s 1908 Meyer May House. The arched entry echoes Wright’s 1902 Dana House. The center’s architecture imitates the cross-axial design of Wright’s 1902 Ward Willets House. Topped by a 40-foot-long ridged skylight over a two-story lobby, the center is a contemporary interpretation of the century old Prairie School style.

Letarski House (Brian Letarski, 1999)

Nestled in a hemlock forest in the Village of Weston, the Brian and Carmen Letarski House is built of cypress and hand-chiseled sandstone, set on a Cherokee Red concrete slab. Clerestory windows flood interior spaces with natural light while harboring privacy. Mitered corner windows, roof overhangs, and integration with nature echo Wright’s Usonian designs.

Sorenson House (Gary Sobeck, 2000)

Set on a rolling glade, the John and Kay Sorenson House borrows elements from Wright’s Usonian and Prairie designs to create what architect Gary Sobek calls a “Post Wright” composition. Highlights include a screened porch based on Wright’s unbuilt 1893 boat house design for Madison’s Lake Monona, cantilevered decks in the style of Wingspread, and angular formed walls reminiscent of Wright’s unbuilt Schwenn House. It also features reproduction Wright-designed furnishings throughout.
