Dr. Maurice and Mrs. Margaret Greenberg House
Frank Lloyd Wright, 1954 - Dousman, WI
After visiting Taliesin, Dr. Greenberg knew instantly that he wanted Frank Lloyd Wright to design a home for him. Similar to Taliesin, the Greenberg House nestles into the brow of its hill. Walls of glass in the spacious living room provide broad views over the surrounding treetops. The current homeowners, who bought the house a few years ago after Dr. Greenberg passed away, plan to add the master bedroom suite and a workshop as originally designed by Wright.

Greenberg
The Stanley & Harriet Schirmir House
John Randal McDonald, 1958 - Oconomowoc, WI
Racine native John Randal McDonald followed Wright's principles but developed his own interpretations and style as seen in his design for this house on Lower Nemahbin Lake in Oconomowoc. The structure echoes a Jacobs II-like hemicycle, with cullet glass windows reminiscent of Bruce Goff's Ford House in Aurora, IL, owned by Friday's guest speaker Sidney Robinson. The Schirmirs did most of the work on this house themselves.

Schirmir
Richard C. and Berenice Smith House
Frank Lloyd Wright, 1950 - Jefferson, WI
This one-story house built of limestone, plaster, cypress, and cedar shingles is strikingly wrapped around a huge oak tree on a small city lot in Jefferson, WI, and oriented toward the golf course to the south. Mr. Smith was a local attorney who lived in the house for thirty-six years, through three marriages. In the early '90s architect John Eifler was hired by subsequent owners to rehabilitate the house. The current homeowner is continuing the restoration, having it reroofed this spring.

Smith
E. Clarke and Julie Arnold House
Frank Lloyd Wright, 1954 - Columbus, WI
This low one-story home is built of Wisconsin limestone, redwood board and-batten, and glass. It is one of Wright's diamond module homes, a form he used in the Kinney House, the Smith House and a number of other homes he designed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In this design, all the angles are either 60 degrees or 120 degrees. Wright apprentice John H. Howe designed a third wing in 1959, which established the final Y-shaped plan of the house. Reroofing is also underway here.

Arnold
Dr. Arnold and Mrs. Lora Jackson House
Frank Lloyd Wright, 1956 - Beaver Dam, WI
Moved from its original Madison site to Beaver Dam when the property was sold for commercial development, "Skyview" was the second of Marshall Erdman & Associates' Pre-Fab Number 1 designs constructed. Looking as contemporary today as when it was built, Skyview is now comfortably settled into the hillside of its new neighborhood.

Jackson
Dr. and Mrs. C. L. Quall House
Russell Barr Williamson, 1952
Russell Barr Williamson worked with Frank Lloyd Wright on several Milwaukee houses before striking out on his own in the early 1920s. In the mid-1900s, he built a series of tripartite houses including this one, set on the shores of Beaver Dam Lake. The use of natural materials, the principles of organic design and the lakefront setting make this functional and beautiful house feel like a vacation retreat.

Quall
Jim and Ruby Maloney House
John Randal McDonald, 1957
Although John Randal McDonald never studied with Wright, his homes share the ground-hugging shapes and strong horizontal lines so often at play in Wright's work. Turning its back on the street in true Wrightian fashion, the better to embrace Beaver Dam Lake, this elegantly executed lakeside home exemplifies the best of contemporary living.

Maloney
The Farmers and Merchants Union Bank
Louis Sullivan, 1919
Louis Sullivan's last major commission features the trademarks of his previous "jewel box" banks in other Midwest towns-corner location, rectilinear massing, ornate terra-cotta decoration, and an arcade of arched windows. (Watch for it in Johnny Depp's upcoming Dillinger movie.) The building remains a bank to this day, beautifully and proudly maintained. Sensitive additions were made in 1958 and again in 1980 to keep up with necessities of business.
